Chennai: Well-known dramatist and film comedian S.Ve. Shekhar, who recently joined the BJP, has not been invited to the meeting of party PM candidate Narendra Modi on Friday.
Reason: Modi’s meeting at the state headquarters Kamalalayam is meant only for the state executive members while Shekhar is yet to get any posting. He had met Modi in Ahmedabad earlier this month and pledged to campaign for the party, not just in Tamil Nadu but “wherever Tamils lived across the country”.
Sources close to Shekhar expressed the fear that he might be caught in the crossfire of faction feuding in TN BJP, which is pretty apparent even though the party’s muscle is barely visible in most parts of the Dravidian political turf. State secretary Vanathi Srinivasan is confident of bagging the party’s South Chennai ticket but is said to be suspicious that Shekhar is lobbying for it.
“I have made it clear to Modiji that I do not want any seat as that would bind me to a single constituency while I would be useful for the party campaigning everywhere. If the high command wishes to give me some responsibility after the election, I am willing to take it up,” said Shekhar, when asked about the rumours that his supporters want him as the South Chennai candidate.
Many in the BJP, and even outside, expect the party to make Shekhar the propaganda secretary considering that he is a popular face among the public already, thanks to his drama-cinema fame.
But there is a hitch in this. Both the national parties- the Congress and the BJP have been scrupulously putting down star celebrities while maintaining a façade of ‘serious politics’ as opposed to ‘cinema maayai (magic)’
Although it could be a bit too dramatic and invidious to compare Shekhar to giants like Sivaji Ganesan and MGR, the historic truth is that MGR migrated from an indifferent Congress to a grateful DMK while Sivaji suffered huge humiliation in the Congress.
On the other hand, even glamour stars like Kushboo and Ramarajan were put to optimum campaign use in the Dravidian parties.
It is worthwhile to recall that during his short stint in the Congress, the party did not use him in the last state elections while ally DMK called him for poll meets in six of its constituencies.
Congress candidates in Pudukottai and Puducherry were nicer to him. “The BJP leaders here may also treat him in similar manner, scared that he would steal the show if they share a platform with Shekhar.
The culture is different in north; see how much the party leaders respect Shatrugan Sinha there,” quipped a BJP youth functionary.
